ADVERTISEMENTS TO BE BANNED ON KENYA TV CHANNELS – LIKE IT OR NOT
The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has issued a 14-day ultimatum on seven advertisements aired on local television stations, for the respective companies to submit their ads for approval by the board or risk being scrapped off.
KFCB prohibited local stations from airing seven ads which include; East Africa Breweries Ltd’s (EABL) Tusker Lite (featuring TV personality Jeff Koinange), Durex condoms, EABL’s Snapp, London Distillers, Trust, Lux and Pwani Oil’s Fresh Fry, citing they contained classified pornographic to nude content.

KFCB Boss Ezekiel Mutua, stated that the ads, which laud drug abuse and sex, were being aired at any times of the day hence influencing adolescents and teenagers negatively.
“By airing these unclassified adverts, the advertisers and broadcasters are violating the Kenya Information and Communication Act that empowers the board to impose age restrictions on all programmes to be aired to ensure content that depicts adult scenes are not shown between 5am-10pm,” Mutua was quoted by the Standard
Mutua added that they had informed alcohol producers that their advertisements must be examined by the Board before being broadcasted.
According to KFCB, their next whip would land on children computer games, Mexican soaps and Nigerian’s Afro Sinema in a bid to regulate content exposed in country.
